Economical coating of small parts has long been difficult, due
to high labor costs required for racking and unracking. Therma-Tron-X
has developed a new electrocoating
process that allows small parts and fasteners to be painted in bulk
quantities with a minimum of operator handling.
Barrel Coating economically coats small parts.
The barrel coating process combines
the high capacity of barrel finishing with the efficiency of our
SlideRail Square Transfer (SST)
material handling system. Parts are pretreated, E-coated, cured
and cooled in the same container, maximizing throughput. Together
with a unique paint formulation that minimizes touch marks and part-to-part
bonding, barrel coating revolutionizes
the way small metal parts are finished.
Parts are loaded and unloaded in bulk at the same conveyor station
using power assisted dumping mechanisms and shipping totes. While
in the system, the barrels are partially rotated at intervals to
mix the parts and insure that all surfaces receive treatment. This
is especially important in the electrocoating tank, where paint
deposits on surfaces with the thinnest coating more quickly. Reordering
the barrel contents means that all the parts will emerge within
tolerance for coating thickness.
The SST combines immersion pretreatment,
electrocoating and curing in a single unit with an economical footprint.
Parts are vertically lowered into and raised out of tanks not much
larger than the work envelope, and the curing oven is placed over
the pretreatment and E-coat stages. Throughput is maximized because
- unlike a programmed hoist - all loads are processed simultaneously,
and multiple colors are also possible.
Drawbacks: Touch points may not be acceptabe for Class A automotive
parts.
